How to Keep Squirrels Away From Your Garden

The pepper flakes do not discourage them from the bird feeder. I have a baffle and it is amazing to watch the squirrel stretch out to get a fingernail in the feeder and pull out seeds. I can walk out and stare them in the eye and they won't go away. If I get close they go around the other side of the decorative fence and come up behind my back. They are scared of the cats but I watch them in the feeder if the cat isn't watching them. These are from my neighbors yards.
Thank you for the insights concerning squirrels , i really have problem with them , as all of our cocoa fruits are taken by them completely. And now I plan to keep & breed some barn owls, and its food , like mice etc. As such we let the nature keep its balances -
The brand Yankee Flipper, Dipper et. al. bird feeders are great for feeding the birds and deterring squirrels. Some of their designs are weight specific holding the weight for smaller birds only. Heavier creatures cause the roost bar to 鈥渄ip鈥; or a very smooth, plexiglass disk to drop sideways, thus no footing afforded. The items are an expense but worth it.
For the garden areas, old/unused CD鈥檚 hung with string from horizontal garden poles help a long with head-bobbing owls statues.
I am in shock and upset I have just seen a squirrel eat a goldfinch the ones I feed every day . I am angry and annoyed and I love the birds being a twitcher I watch them . The reason I am angry is because this squirrel has been coming for years and never done anything like this before, don't get me wrong I will not hurt them please any suggestions will be appreciated thank you
I have tried all the peppers and garlic and all the other natural tips. None work. As my friend said only poison and bullets work on them
Im going to have to start shooting the ones in our yard. The old lady next door feeds them 5 gallons of peanuts a week. They have destroyed 3k worth of flowers in my beds. Ive asked her to stop and she wont. I also now go out when i see her and bang two pans together and sing the lady gaga song, ra ra rah rah rah as loud as i can.
The only thing I've found to keep them out of flower beds, window boxes & pots are strong coffee grounds. It's an ongoing job though..I sprinkle around edge of patio, sidewalk and add used strong grounds for watering, seems to help flower growth too. My neighbor hand feeds them causing them to be bit too comfortable being up close, very aggravating....& my yard smells like a coffeehouse! But so far it's worked thru 2 Summers & hopefully this will be 2nd Fall!
Tried blood meal as well. it didn't make a difference.
The squirrels in my garden love cayenne pepper.
I sprinkled and sprayed it everywhere and they still dug up all my flower pots and tore my seat cushions to shreds and made a mess.
I also tried garlic, peppermint and clove oil. Nothing worked.
Tried covering my pots with cardboard to hide the dirt as well. Didn't work. They probably could smell the soil.
They ate all my strawberry seedlings as well and killed my plants.
Dog hair does NOT work to keep squirrels away. I put big fat clumps of it all over my containers and the squirrels dug right through it and ate up a bunch of vegetables like nothing was even there.
