How to Keep Squirrels Away From Your Garden

Squirrels are chewing on my wooded porch. The steps and the top of porch. Looks awful. Any suggestions?
I swear by hot pepper suet. The birds are not deterred--the downy woodpeckers seem to enjoy it. One obese squirrel sampled the suet and within seconds jumped off the feeder pole. He ran around the yard.
Hot pepper is available in many garden centers, hardware stores, and from that big, giant online retailer named for the river in South America.
I have threaded a slinky (the children's spring toy) over the pole which my bird feeder is attached to. When the squirrels try to climb the pole, the slinky makes it difficult. The birds fly in to the feeder at the top of the pole and have no contact with the slinky. It's the only deterrent that has worked for me!
I sprinkle cinnamon powder on the plants and so far squirrels are keeping away from my flowers
Inviting owls to your garden will result in the killing of your small dogs or cats - owls are not picky when choosing their prey.
I am having trouble with the squirrels eating my grape hyacinth starts. They eat the top leaves and there's just a stem left. I appreciate many of the suggestions on how to keep them away; however, many are toxic to dogs, so if you have a dog I recommend you check out the substance you are planning to use to deter these pesky little critters before you actually use it. Peppermint oil, vapor rub, and cayenne pepper are all toxic to dogs. I am so frustrated at the squirrels ruining my garden, but love my dog more than I hate the squirrels!
We have 2 mini doxies and the squirrels love to torment them by running on top of the fence, so that makes our dogBARK and that's very annoying for our neigbors and us. We have to go out and bodily bring our dogs inside. I hope you can give us some suggestions so we can have happy neigbors. Many thanks
That’s a tough one. There are options: 1) training (dogs can be trained to stop barking), 2) Remove the visual stimulus with blinds or curtains closed at time, 3) reduce the squirrel population by limiting food sources and shelter, using scent repellents, and intruding predators, etc. The first two options are easier!
Please help my dog jumped in my onion raised bed and disturbed all onions some are exposing roots!
I'm definitely going to try using cayenne pepper next year against the squirrels. I had these two great big sunflowers in my backyard. And they were so close to blooming when the squirrels broke the tops off of both of them for the seeds! But next year I am determined to get a beautiful yellow sunflower! Thank you for those tips!
