Growing Aloe Vera Plants: Watering, Lighting, Repotting, Use, and More!

Aloes drop leaves when they are overwatered. Succulents need very little water. Let it dry out. Repot in lightly dampened soil. Don鈥檛 water it until it dries out.
Good article! I just brought an aloe vera home from the supermarket and in only a couple of days it stretched out towards the light, which was unexpected for a succulent!?
Its a fairly bright westward window. I wanted to say that I learned not to use aloe directly from the plant, but let the cut off leaf "bleedcin a glass of water a few hours first. It will turn milky as the Aloe releases latex which is naturally generated in the leaves and can cause irritation.
Once the latex is depleted the pulp or gel can be used to treat skin, or a piece of cut leaf can be taped to a wound with a bandaid or bandage. Removingnthe latex (over night to be sure) also makes it edible without real risk of nausea etc. Just don't overdo it, a half teaspoonspoon of gel in a smoothy is enough.
You don't want to ingest latex. Or pour it on a wound.
I live in a nordic climate so they get leggy in winter, but I shall try out a supplememtary led light and see if that helps.
Question: do I need to repot my plant? It's still as it came from the store a few days ago.
Thank you!
Hi Jo-
There is no need to repot your aloe, yet (unless you really want to).
I hope you are well. I read your article about aloe vera. This is very informative and helpful for using aloe vera. I appreciate your article. I have also written an article about aloe vera. Please check my article and give me feedback.
Best way to Grow and Care Aloe Vera
just purchased an aloe vera plant and I repotted it.
leaves are turning grayish and soft to the touch.
What did I do wrong?
Over watered. It's important to allow roots to dry before you replant. Do not water after you replant for about a week or so.
Hi Christine,
Your aloe plant turning gray is a sign of shock. It can happen when it goes through a dramatic change like repotting. It is not uncommon for it to change to a grayish color for a little while. It can also happen when it is subjected to too much direct sun or when it is not slowly acclimated to a move outdoors. Your best option is to continue to follow the growing guidelines above in terms of sunlight and watering and your aloe plant should bounce back.
My plant is quite large with lots of pups, it's turning brownish on the tips. Any suggestions? It's still putting off new leaves in the middle, but also the tips are turning brownish...
Hi, Marsha. Brownish/red hue on aloe tips usually means sunburn. If it’s stretching out and the brown tips are on older leaves, you can just cut those lower leaves off. Roots grow from under the oldest leaves on the stem base.
My aloe plant is huge
More tree like with heavy 10鈥檌nch long leaves
Should I report it
