The Origins of National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day was established in 2006 by Colleen Paige, a pet lover and animal behaviorist. The goal was to create a day dedicated to celebrating all puppies, especially to encourage adoptions as a first choice, to encourage rescues, and to strongly discourage buying from pet stores supplied by puppy/kitten mills.

The day quickly gained popularity, becoming a beloved tradition for dog lovers worldwide. Holidays such as National Dog Day, National Cat Day, and National Puppy Day have helped save millions of unwanted pets.

To get technical, a puppy is any dog under the age of 2 years old. However, we think that they are all puppies at heart! Calculate your best friend’s age in human years by using our Dog Age Calculator.

Celebrating the Power of Pups

So, how can you celebrate National Puppy Day? Here are a few ideas:

  • Shower your pup with love: Spend extra quality time with your furry friend. Play fetch, go for a walk, or cuddle up on the couch.
  • Consider adoption: If you’re thinking about adding a canine companion to your family, consider adopting from a shelter or rescue organization. Many wonderful dogs of all ages are waiting for their forever homes.
  • Volunteer your time: Shelters and rescues always need help. You can walk dogs, socialize with them, or help with fundraising efforts.
  • Spread the puppy love: Share photos and videos of your dog on social media using the hashtag #NationalPuppyDay.

Beyond Cuteness: Responsible Pet Ownership

National Puppy Day isn’t just about puppy snuggles (although there’s definitely a place for that!). It’s also a day to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of adoption. Before welcoming a puppy into your home, be sure you can provide for its needs. This includes proper food, veterinary care, training, and lots of love and attention.
