Thank you for sharing your experience! You had me at Mommy dragging them food. Reminding you of little cats cinched it for me! I'm going to have to try some pet crickets.
Thanks Jason for your great insight on crickets! My daughter brought some home from the pet shop yesterday as she didn't want them to be used as food and she saw that half in the tub had already died. Water crystals needed I think...and you have given me some great ideas on improving their habitat. I suspected that the would make great pets...thank you for all of your tips!
How do you attract crickets to your yard if none are present?
If you have a lawn, let the grass grow longer. Crickets need the shelter from predators, and will feed on the grass and other plants.
Hello! I have been keeping a cricket that I found early December 2020 about Dec 2nd. I still have the cricket I believe to be a female. I read about them as much as I can and all say it will only live 8-12 weeks or so.. I have mine in a snazzy meatloaf type tin and with dirt, grass bits, branch pieces, water in a soda cap. I feed it dry grits with bacon bits, dry peach oatmeal, dry oatmeal with walnuts and apple, lettuce bits, potato bits and peel, variety of vegetables in tiny portions.. Lol. Just wanted to let others know mine is almost 6 months old! Oh, not letting grandchildren know about it contributes to longevity! Take care of your cricket babys everyone! Greetings from Augusta Georgia 鉂わ笍
Been keeping a pet cricket lately that crept into my house in early fall. After experimenting with various vegetables, I found that this particilar cricket, which is a brown House Cricket, really likes beans.
I rescued about 20 crickets from the pet store in early October 2020. Sadly most of them passed on, but I gratefully still have my two boys going strong! I tell you I REALLY love them so much with all my Heart 鉂 I so look forward to everyday taking care of them, feeding them a super healthy schmorgesboard of a buffet and hearing them sing鉂 really Love and keep them safe!
Recently returned from an off-grid cottage in Val Des Monts, Quebec. At night, it was completely silent. I did not hear any crickets chirping or cicada bugs buzzing. The weather was very hot during the day (29-31 deg C), cooler at night (15-17 deg C). I found this really strange as I have never experienced this type of quietness before. I just assumed crickets chirping and the cicada bugs were everywhere......
I've actually kept crickets (as well as other insects) several times. If you can get a small terrarium with a live plant they do even better. It's not too expensive either. A small travel one from your local pet store is fine, and it gives them more room to play, and seems to help them live a longer. Just be careful with a set up that has dirt that any snacks you give don't mold, it can over take the terrarium and the cricket
That’s a great point (about the mold). We’ll add it above.
