I made my own wool laundry balls years ago, but alas, they eventually began unraveling. I still use wool dryer balls (purchased) and love how natural they are and how they soften the clothes while drying. Meanwhile not releasing any nasty chemical smells into the air.
I have always used plain white vinegar instead of fabric softener. It is great because 1) it "sets" colors on fabrics that may fade or bleed, 2) it is very natural as opposed to chemical fabric softener, and 3) is reasonably priced.
