Thank you very much for this article. Okay, I have a confession to make. When I moved, it seems a borrowed hymnal got moved with me. I've been thinking (for a while now) that I really should mail it back, although I've justified the delay given that they were in the process of, once again, switching to some different version anyway. In any event, this new and fascinating knowledge, especially about meter, is not exactly an incentive for me to part with "my" hymnal here! Also, I just wanted to say that, based on personal experience, I agree that "taking the hymnal and reading it with some degree of real attention" is an excellent use of time during sermons. :D
