Yet another bit of 19th c. folklore (based on fact--one can find reports of this happening in the country papers) was to be careful while presenting the dead for viewing during a thunderstorm because they might explode. This gives a striking picture of what was tolerated in the era of ice, cooling boards, summer heat and no embalming.
