When I read the bit about blowing out radiation that could severely alter life on earth my initial reaction was "well, good thing it's at least 400 light years away. It can't affect us." Then I thought "Wait a minute, if it's 400 light years away it could have already blown up. We won't know it until all that stuff is about to hit us."

Obviously I'm not well up to speed (?) on this type of thing... But I suppose it's like so many things we're quietly ignorant of... If we knew how many things there are out there that could kill us we'd probably all go off the rails! As has been said many times before, "Ignorance is bliss!"
