I'll never forget the sense of shock when I went to get some little-used spice off a shelf in my kitchen, where I had a whole stash of spices I'd brought back from Europe, along with normal ones for baking -- and found that the area had been raided by rats -- they took almost everything out through a hole in the back of the cabinet that had been only covered by the previous owner (of this 1914 house) with plastic, and I hadn't realized it was covering a hole through to the outside!
We just imagined the tummy aches the rats must have had after feasting on cloves and cardamom! They completely ignored the oatmeal and things right next to them!
