Golden Rod has a high energy (heat) content second only to sawgrass for making heating pellets (if I correctly recall some articles I red many years ago). However it is not commonly used since it also makes so much ash that it can suffocate the fire when burned in a pellet stove designed for hardwood pellets that produce less ash. But still, a clump of dried goldenrod stalks makes great tinder/small kindling to start a fire with.
