My father was a Soil Conservation agent in the 40s and 50s, and we always had a garden as I was growing up. One of his favorite hacks for irrigation was to cut the top and bottom out of a tall slim can, such as for long asparagus spears, and bury it vertically adjacent to a plant. When the plant needed water, he would simply fill the can with water, refilling it if the water drained down quickly. This delivered the water to the plant roots.
