There is a world of difference in quality of knife sharpening steels. We have one out of a well know quality brand modern knife set which is almost worthless. We use my father's "Lee" brand knife sharpening steel which I am guessing he probably bought in the 1940s or 1950s. The old Lee is far and away superior!
