Planting, Growing, and Harvesting Grapes
ADVERTISEMENT
I bought a house on 7 acres a year n half ago.
I have a grape vine and it's on the ground. It has ALOT of grapes. I want to proper care for it and get it off the ground. Should I try to separate the vines now and build a trellis now or do it in the spring?
I can send pics of someone emails me.
Thank You very much
Mardella
From the sound of it, your vine probably hasn’t been pruned for a while. That would be your first step. Because of the way grape vines grow and fruit, they should be pruned every year. You will want to choose some of the older wood to serve as the 鈥減ermanent鈥 framework to support the fruiting canes; pruning should be done to remove the previous year’s fruiting canes. The idea is to remove the canes that have fruited and keep the younger canes that have yet to fruit—each year you are making room for the following year’s fruit. It would be a good idea to get it pruned and onto a trellis now.
What month is good to plant grapes, what month are they ready to prun and what month are they ready to pick.
Thanks
Planting is early spring and depends on where you live. If the grape vines are one year old, you may prune the vine each spring before growth begins. Harvesting is less related to a specific day than it is related to the taste and feel of the grape as described above.
i want to know about the growing grape gardens
I am wondering when is the best time to harvest concord grapes in Utah. I have heard several opinions regarding the best time such as waiting for the first frost. The grapes are sweet and plump, but the vines are still mostly green. Any advice?
Hi Abe,
If they are plump and sweet, then the time is now. The color of the cane is not an indicator in terms of harvesting. Pick them now before the birds do!
It is mid September in Michigan. We were given seven bare root grape plants. Should we plant them now? Or should we wait until spring? How would we preserve them until spring? Thank you.
Hi, Colleen: It’s best not to plant now. Please see the answer below, and thanks for asking!
Hello, I am being gifted a cutting from my grandfather's heirloom grapes but it's September! Is there a way to preserve the cutting until spring or shall I try to plant and winterize? I live in southern Idaho. Thank you so much for any advice.
