I cut/slice my onions under a small stream of running water, and I NEVER have any irritated or teary eyes. Works for me. Give it a try. A lesson isn't learned until it is applied!!!
If you light a candle and place it near the cutting board, there will be no tears. I learned this years ago from a Martha Stewart tip site. It works great!
When I cut onions, I turn on the overhead fan in the kitchen on low.
Works great...!
Another way to keep from tearing while cutting onions is to wet a paper towel and put it by the onion. It really works!
Most definitely works! It's the only way I cut an onion now.
Actually I just start cutting the onion from the bottom to the top. No tears
Glad to read that onions are not harmful to eat after you鈥檝e cut them; they are safe to keep in your refrigerator. I鈥檝e always kept mine in the refrigerator if I didn鈥檛 use it all at time of cutting. Good article on how to properly dice an onion too. Peeling my onion under cold running water cuts down on my tears too.
I cut the two ends off and rinse in the sink - I always do this and I've never had a problem :)
I wonder if the myth originated because the smell of cut onions tended to keep away the rats, which carried fleas, which transmitted the plague bacteria? Many such beliefs started with accurate observations, which then led to incorrect conclusions about the mechanism because the science was not understood at the time.
