This recipe makes a delicious Challah bread. My mom has made this excellent bread using this same recipe with one exception- substituting drained cottage cheese for the ricotta cheese. I specifically use "Good Culture" brand cottage cheese which, in my opinion tastes so much better than other cottage cheeses & contains active lactobacillus cultures- (probiotics.)
I also make round loaves for Rosh Hashanah & the high holy days.
Others who I've shared this Challah bread recipe with also highly recommended this recipe. It's a great base for making strata & bread pudding.
It’s not challah if it has any dairy. Hence, the use of olive oil instead of butter, and water instead of milk, as might be used in other sweet egg breads.
What ricotta cheese???
Ha ha I was thinking that exact same thing! 😂
Then I checked out the Challah-Mushroom Strata recipe next to it and that has the cheese in it.
Looks like the comment landed on the wrong recipe 😄
Oh yeah, Gotcha! LOL! 😂
Hi. Love your recipes. Wanted to bake the challah, and noted your mentioned that you converted the measurements to USA , but you could leave the measurements also on metric. I'm over here in Europe and I often have a darn time converting. Maybe a suggestion to have a conversion button somewhere so that also us Europeans have it a bit easier. Many thanks and keep up the great work.ciao from Italy. Ursula.
Thanks for your kind words. The Old Farmer’s ÃÛÌÒÁµÈË is published in the U.S. and Canada and we do not have the European measurements for any of our recipes.
However, there are many programmed converters online. Here is one to bookmark: https://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/cooking/
