This croque monsieur is a traditional hot sandwich made with thinkly-sliced ham ham and soft, melty cheese. Literally meaning 鈥渕ister crunch鈥 in French this sandwich makes a satisfying crunch as you bite down on the toasted bread.

(If you can not find Gruyere cheese, you need a cheese that melts well for this kind of sandwich. Substitutions would include Comte, Raclette, Emmental (鈥淪wiss Cheese鈥), or possible Gouda.)

Ingredients
8 slices white or sourdough bread
4 slices Gruyere cheese
4 slices smoked ham
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter
Instructions

Heat a large griddle over medium heat. Prepare four ham-and-cheese sandwiches, spreading the mustard on one slice of bread for each sandwich. In a shallow bowl, beat eggs and milk together. Dip both sides of each sandwich in the egg mixture. Melt the butter and grill the sandwiches, flipping once.
