Mark Twain Quotes and Curiosities

There are two people with whom I would love to chat: Eleanor Roosevelt and Mark Twain.
I saw Hal Holbrook portraying Mark Twain in Denver years ago. I felt like I was watching the real Mark Twain. It was mesmerizing, and something I will never forget.
He once observed: 鈥淲hen I was younger, I could remember anything, whether it happened or not; but my faculties are decaying now and soon I shall be so that I can not remember any but the things that never happened. It is sad to go to pieces like this, but we all have to do it.鈥
I now can attest to this truth. Once the #1 athlete coming out of high school with a football scholarship to just about any school I wanted, now I find the need to sell a 1907 house because I can no longer maintain it & the stairs have become unsafe for me. We come into this world unable to walk & if we live long enough, we leave this world the same way.
鈥淚f you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.鈥
鈥淎 lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.鈥
鈥淣ever tell the truth to people who are not worthy of it.鈥
鈥淚 did not attend his funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.鈥
鈥淟oyalty to country ALWAYS. Loyalty to government, when it deserves it.鈥
The best thing I have ever read is by Mark Twain. Diaries of Adam and Eve.
My favorite, " The War Prayer"
Bless you all for such informative articles that are delightful! I just love the almanac too! Hard to put down!
My favorite Twain quote is "If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man but deteriorate the cat'.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest American authors. His many stories are a delight, such as "bad boy" Jim who went on to become a Congressman. Also his Letters from the Earth and his lesser known Mississippi writings such as Pudd'nhead Wilson deserve to be better known. He is attributed to having produced the first type-written manuscript submitted for publication. A prolific writer whose Huckleberry Finn is one of America's greatest novels.
I've loved Twain's life and works all my life. I went to Hannibal, Missouri a decade ago to see his boyhood home and the Samuel Clemens sights. I highly recommend it. My favorite books of Twain's are "Life on the Mississippi" and his autobiography. I hope to see him in the next life. I would love to chat with him.
I love this man so much. He is one of the people I wanted to be when I grew up. When the black clouds start to hem me in, I whip out my copy of Roughing It and fight them off. My two favorite books are Roughing It and Dracula. That makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? I wish I could have met him. He was a lousy business man but a marvelous human being.
