"December 21 is the Winter Solstice鈥攖he astronomical day when Earth is farthest away from the Sun."
No, that is aphelion, which happens in early July, about two weeks after the Summer Solstice.

Taken from the linked Winter Solstice page:
"Specifically, it鈥檚 the exact moment when a hemisphere is tilted as far away from the Sun as possible."
"Another way to think of this is that on the day of the solstice, the Sun鈥檚 path reaches its most southerly point in the sky. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this means that the Sun鈥檚 path is as low in the sky as it can get鈥攅ven at 鈥渉igh noon.鈥
"The winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year, making it the 鈥渟hortest day鈥 of the year."

Also, paperwhites are Narcissus papyraceus.
