I loved May Day as a kid. I our rural town, May Day was a big deal. We would start making May Baskets in early April. My mother made exquisite ones. Us kids helped her until we got the craft down. Then we made them. We used colored construction paper for the square baskets with handles. Then learned to make artificial flowers, leaves and stems from crepe paper. We had a contest in town for the most beautiful, most novel, most elaborate, and a couple other categories. There were categories from kids to adults. Entries would be on display in the front windows of the Main St. stores. You voted on which was your favorite at each store. On May 1, we would deliver baskets filled with candy and a flower or 2, to neighbors, friends and relatives. It was a lot of fun for several weeks. The school also had a May celebration. For me, the most fun was making May Baskets with my mother.
I miss May Day.
