Who 鈥淚nvented鈥 Father鈥檚 Day?
The first known Father鈥檚 Day service occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, after the worst mining accident in U.S. history.
This horrific accident killed more than 360 men and boys and left about 1,000 children fatherless. Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton wanted to honor the many fathers who had died with a Sunday service in Fairmont.
Mrs. Clayton was the daughter of a dedicated reverend who had died in 1896, so she knew what it was like to lose a father.
Father鈥檚 Day Gains Momentum
Although the Fairmont service was the first known to honor fathers, it did not turn into an annual event.
Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd is credited with helping Father鈥檚 Day become a U.S. national holiday. Her story began when she sat listening to a Mother鈥檚 Day sermon in 1909. Mrs. Dodd thought that it might be nice to honor fathers as well.
Mrs. Dodd鈥檚 father, William Smart, had raised his SIX children alone on his farm in Washington after his wife died giving birth. Mrs. Dodd proposed to the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA that they celebrate a 鈥渇ather鈥檚 day.鈥She chose the 5th of June because it was her father鈥檚 birthday.
The idea received strong support, but the good ministers of Spokane asked that the day be changed to give them extra time to prepare sermons on the unexplored subject of fathers. The first Father鈥檚 Day in Spokane, Washington, was observed on June 19, 1910 (the third Sunday in June) and became an annual event there. Soon, other towns had their own celebrations.
Despite widespread support, Father鈥檚 Day was not a permanent national holiday for many years. It wasn鈥檛 until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed a law declaring that Father鈥檚 Day be celebrated annually on the third Sunday in June. It has been an official, permanent national holiday ever since.

I was raised on a dairy farm in Western NY. We were a family of 7 children. One thing I remember and enjoyed about my dad was our family summer softball game. Our summers were very busy with cutting, baling and storing the hay in the barn for our cows in the winter. So it was nice to have a break from doing that and enjoy dad in a softball game.
The father 鈥榮 role remains unacknowledged the world over , the mothers seem to take all the credit from child bearing to upbringing. There is nothing that can match the strength and confidence of a father which makes the children brave and confident. Both the parents do their best for their children. It is unhealthy to make comparisons to prove who is the best best ..
It鈥檚 very rude to have people talk in church. On Sat at the 5 pm Mass it was terrible. I almost left. It鈥檚 annoying and you can鈥檛 even pray. The next time I鈥檓 going to tell them to not talk. If you do that go outside. Please bring this to the attention of your ushers etc.
It was good if fathers who are always engage in prepare shelter and food for children and anxoius about their future, to learn children and speak more to them, tell about lots of lies.wolfs.dogs in the mask of friends....even small phrases would increase self esteem of child. why some fathers are so far of their children and even dont know his class grade....and their children dont know how to behave in the society as a human?
