I have to call foul about not consuming aloe vera, In Central and South America the aloe plant is used to make medicinal drinks for all types of aliments. They simple use a serrated edge knife to scrape the inner core out of the plant and ten mix it into a prepared liquid with other plants the liquids are hot or cold. there are even commercial drinks in these markets that have pieces of raw aloe in them. One of them that I remember is called "Salviloe" which is taken from the name "sabila" which is Spanish for aloe vera just for and example. There are numerous brands. All of them sell well and are highly used for anything like simple thirst to feeling bad in the stomach from excessive food or drink. Plus I am living testament that drinking aloe is safe I have done this for more than 10 years. However I do understand that the LEGAL department is probably envolved in the editing of these articles and requires that there is a statement that will keep any one from claiming you told me I could drink it and looked what happened. So have fun make well informed decisions and be safe.
It is probably because if not prepared right the latex of the plant can give a laxative effect.
It's edible but only if prepared correctly.
But to be honest it isn't that hard I think.
Thank you, Wayne for your wonderful post about drinking aloe vera. All her life, my mom kept a glass of water with sabila to drink regularly just as you've described. Her Cuban mom passed on the practice to her as part of her heritage. Both women transitioned in their late nineties. I hope some readers will follow your suggestions. Aloe vera was super safe for my family.
my aloe are thick and seem healthy. My problem is they always lay over then fall out of the pot. any ideas?
I put 3 stakes around mine to keep them upright, then water them a little more to maintain turgor pressure.
Try to plant your alow in clay balls or a pumice mix..it gives the weight you need in the pot and helps to prevent root rot.

One of my aloe vera plants has flowered. Can I save the seeds? Can you tell me how to proceed?
Yes, you can save the seeds once the plant is flowering! After the flowers brown and lose petals, the pods will dry and turn brownish-green. Then split the pods to extract the seeds. If you Google 鈥淎loe Seed Propagation 鈥 How To Grow Aloe From Seeds,鈥 you’ll find advice on how to grow the plant.
