I finally got an identification of a plant as lyre-leaf sage, or salvia lyrata. It puts up a long stalk of purple flowers in April and May here in E TN. My plant-identifying friend pointed out that it has a square stem like most mints. Another site says it is sometimes planted "for its attractive foliage and flowers" but can become invasive. It grows wild in my fields and I like looking at it there! although in the garden I do try to keep it pulled.
