My practice has been nearly identical over decades without any problems. I prefer not conditioning but have done it both ways. Like you, there always comes a time when a good scrubbing down to metal and clean and dry is the best remedy. I prefer the meals I make to have their own flavors based on the ingredients and cooking, as opposed to some left over residues. But whatever works for you is all that truly matters.
