How to Dry Your Garlic for Homemade Garlic Powder!

I have been making garlic powder for ~5 years. Learned a few tricks along the way. I now add a bit of dried hot peppers (not too much). Gives the powder a bit of a zing.
I am on a cutting diet, I know garlic salt has sodium and will make you hold water. But does garlic powder make you hold water? I have been putting it on my chicken with pepper. I know pepper is a fat burner and garlic is great for your heart but will the garlic make me hold water?
Hello Aditya........Garlic Salt is just that.......garlic flavoured salt. Not a good idea in your case so depend on the real garlic powder.
I am trying to determine the best way to keep my garlic after I have made it into powder. Do I just put it in jelly jars and just seal tight? Someone mentioned oven canning it in small jars? Thank you for your help!
Hi Vickie,
Yes, put it into small jars and put the lid on tight. Do not oven can. Make sure that it is really dry or it will stick together in one lump.
How do you store it, and how long is it good for? Also, if you have more precise instructions regarding drying times can you please post?
Thank you.
I like to use a lot of garlic in my cooking so as a result I take peeled garlic and put it in a food processor with the green tops of spring onions and a tablespoon of minced ginger. Once processed I add some canola oil and mince again and then pour into sterilized jars which I keep in the fridge. This means I have garlic all year round - and it keeps its flavor.
Hi Patrick,
I have never tried this but it sounds interesting. However, I would be wary of canola oil--while inexpensive, it's not very good for us. Try true olive oil (Californian for best quality) instead.
Hello I fully agree about the Canola Oil being not the best. I stay with Grapeseed Oil for everything. It has same as any good Olive oil as per quality states on label. I have compared it labels..
