Planting, Growing, and Caring for Hyacinths

I am in Phoenix, and the temperature doesnt go above 70 during the cold months should I plant hyacinths?
I have seen hyacinths blooming in a special bulb vase with just water at the bottom of the vase.
I would like to force my hyacinths to bloom without the use of soil. What do you suggest?
Can I just put the bulbs in the frig for 10 weeks and then put them in the special vase and watch the roots grow and the flower bloom?
Yes, you can grow bulbs in a vase with just a little water. See some of the questions and answers on this page for more information about how to do it.
I was wondering if I am to water the bulbs during the 10 week phase in a cool dark place, or wait until I see shoots of 1".
Thanks,
Cindy
You can keep the soil moist but do not overwater. Just sprinkle a few times during the 10 weeks.
I have a hyacinth bulbs and I live in Zone 9. In my area it is common to refridgerate bulb perennials. Do hyacinth bulbs need a cooling period in a refrigderator or can they be planted normally into the ground?
Plant the bulbs in pots and keep in a dark place at temperatures above freezing but no higher than 45 degrees F, for at least 10 weeks to allow roots to develop. When shoots are about 1 inch long, increase light and temperature gradually.
I have been waiting, 18 days still no response. Soon i'll give up hope and anticipation.
I ordered red Hyacinth bulbs and expect to receive these next week. I want to force them so I can use them for my Xmas holiday tablescape.
Couple of questions: I understand from your website that I need to keep them cold for 10 weeks. I live in Los Angeles and the only place that is truly cold is the refrigerator. But I'm afraid that will kill them! What should I do?
Next, when should I plant them to 'force' them to be ready for Xmas? I am going to plant them in soil, not water so am unsure on the timing especially if I have to keep them cold for 10 weeks. I'll miss my window...
Finally, after they grow, can I transplant them into a different pot and still have them survive indoors?
All advice is welcome!
The bulbs need to be stored in a cool dark place for about 10 weeks. You can put them in paper bags and keep them in a cool basement or shed or put them in your refrigerator. If you have room you can plant the bulbs in pots and then put them in cool storage. After 10 weeks they are ready to be placed in a cool room out of the sun. It will usually take about 3 weeks for the bulbs to develop stalks and buds. Move the pot closer to a window as the plant starts growing. After the hyacinths have bloomed and the leaves turn brown you can remove the bulbs from the pot and store the bulbs in a dry dark area until you are ready to force them again.
