I鈥檝e found quinine works well for me. It鈥檚 in tonic water and there are pill OTC that have for it. They work well also.
I did some research in 2004 and found that too much salt triggered the cramps and restlessness. After eliminating salt for 2 weeks, it stopped and now I have to monitor my salt intake of no more than 600mg/day. I am always craving salt and would always choose salty food instead of sweets. Also now after surgery no more thyroid glands so am always cold and wanting can fish!
I've been reading everyone's comments and there are a few that are right.
Ivory soap works the best for leg cramps. So does mustard & pickle juice. The best thing I've found for RLS is a heating pad. It seems to pull all the tension out of your legs.
The bar of soap doesn't have to be Ivory soap. It can be any bar of soap. The more magnesium the better. I have a bar of soap under my sheets every night.
I read an article in the Seattle times 5or 6 years ago which recommended eating a teaspoon of yellow mustard to relieve a leg cramps. And it works!! I've shared this with my friends..all old people...great results. We even carry little mustard packets most of the time.
I do know for a fact that if I have any type of lotion on my legs, it needs to be washed off before I go to bed or I have terrible RLS.
I have suffered from RLS all my life. My mother and sister both have it. It can drive one to insanity at times. Mine gets so bad that it even affects my arms. I have been to the doctor to check for things like heart disease and low iron. I was low on iron but the supplements and medications did not help. I tried the magnesium/potassium even the Hyde natural. Mentholatum helps but tends to get on sheets etc. I had a friend tell me his grandmother put a bar of ivory soap at the bottom of the be, about 6" up under the sheet when he was little. He had forgotten about it until he was older and the RLS had gotten severe, so he tried it again. He said it had been two years since he had an episode. He says it HAS to be IVORY soap. I decided to try it. I have not had an RLS attack in almost a month. It may not work for everyone, but why not try an inexpensive old wives remedy to see if it helps.
Wanted to say a big "thank you" to Misty Dawn for posting that comment about Ivory soap. after suffering from RLS off-and-on for nearly a decade (had been taking Lyrica and muscle-relaxers to help), literally nothing was working. I have a 10-month-old at home and need to be on top of my game; I was losing so much sleep that it was affecting my acuity and mood.
I've only had the bar of soap in the bed for 2 nights鈥攂ut both nights I went to bed with active pre-tingles only to have everything totally quiet for bedtime. I'll report back after I have more time under my belt but my god... this could mean I can stop muscle-relaxers entirely. (I stopped Lyrica about a year ago and I'm SO glad I did; if you can avoid that drug please do so.)
you have my eternal gratitude!!
I have tried EVERYTHING the others mentioned with limited to no relief. Since the sensations seem to shoot down my legs at night, I wondered if my Smart Relief device might help. I had used it after knee replacement surgery for pain relief, but had not taken it out of the closet for years. I was beyond sleep deprived and desperate to find a solution. I used the device (sends mild electrical impulses into the muscles and nerves) and the RSL stopped immediately. I was having RLS every night and could only sleep for 2-3 hours after it would FINALLY stop. Since I am a teacher, there was no catching up on lost sleep with a nap. I just became more and more sleep deprived. I have now had 5 straight nights of no RLS. I simply use my Smart Relief about 1 hour before going to bed for 10-15 minutes while I am reading or watching tv. I place it on the outside of my right knee - have not had any RLS in either leg since. I have an appointment with my family physician this week, though - just to make sure that the RLS is not a symptom of something else that should be addressed.
Heard this home remedy from a friend and it works wonders: rub Tiger Balm, Icy Hot, or a similar product on your legs. Don't need to go nuts, just a light line of the stuff down the back of your calf and hamstring. Enjoy the sleep!
I developed that night twitching in my legs. 8 had never heard if this before even as a hospital nurse. I kep telling doctors about my symptoms. It too 4 doctors and 3 months of no sleep before a doctor did labs and found I was anemic with hgb 7.0; and low iron. And my plans were abnormal, CBC AND CMP. GFR was very low and heart/ muscle li abs were abnormal. I had bronchitis in Jan and again in March when this dr dud the labs. ( GOING INTO CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE) This was Mar of 2015.
Started taking iron and when ferritin got up some, the RLS went away. Dr had me come in for daily resp treatment and EKG. He saved my life.
I still have GI bleed and hgb drops. But I'm getting monthly ferritin infusion now. GI dr cant seem to find the source of bleeding. I have hiatal hernia and Barretts lesion. Lots of dr appt the last 4 years but my situation is not cured. When my blood count drops the RLS returns.
I am stable right now so doing carafate and watching blood count. If it drops again, the dr may send me for hiatal hernia repair and treat the Barrets.
Low oxygen getting to body parts may create the RLS.
