Planting, Growing, and Harvesting Cauliflower

Hi I am a novice allotmentier and am having trouble with my caulis. I have planted the seedlings out as suggested with the correct amount of space inbetween, but some of them seem to be dying already, the leaves have changed colour a bit and have gone floppy - not looking too promising. I don't know if I have over or underwatered. I have no made a bit of protection from wind incase that is the problem. Advise appreciated as at this rate I don't think I will get to the 'button stage' at all! Thank you
It is impossible to know exactly what might be causing your caulis to collapse, Claire. Here are a few thoughts:
鈥 is the soil good composted matter?
鈥 what is the soil pH? it should be 5.5 to 7.5 (see here: http://www.almanac.com/content/ph-preferences)
鈥 assuming all conditions are favorable, sometimes plants need a little time to get used to the transplant and set roots
鈥 are you watering often enough?
鈥 did you give them a little help when planted, for example a spoonful of fertilzer: chicken poop pellets (not raw poop) or liquid seaweed diluted in water or a a fistful of nice compost?
鈥 have you "collared" the plants to deter hungry pests from crawling up the stem and eating leaves, ultimately weakening the plants? A strip of aluminum foil works well, lightly wrapped around the stem (don't choke the plant)
We hope this helps.
Sir/Mam what happened if there is excess of rainfall on crop ?
Will planting of crop during rainy season will be beneficial or it may create loss?
After reading the different questions and post I have concerns on growing cauliflower in a greenhouse. I have a fan that blows the hot air out, however it can get up to 90 degrees in the heat of the day. Should I transplant these to the out door garden? The temperatures here in Northern NV can reach 90or higher in the Summer so not sure which location would be best. Right now they are growing like crazy but I am getting a few yellow leaves at the bottom.
Cauliflower is a cool-weather crop that requires cool even temperatures to mature. Transplant your seedling outdoors in a spot that will be shaded from the hot afternoon sun.
My cauliflower is turning pink is that a problem?
Cauliflower can turn pink for a few reasons.
1) Some varieties naturally turn pink. 'Snow Crown' may turn pinkish in the heat of summer.
2) White forms, even if self-blanching, will sometimes have a pinkish tinge if exposed to too much sunlight. To keep the head white, cover the developing head by lifting the leaves loosely over it to protect it from the sun; secure the leaves with a clothespin or string.
3) 蜜桃恋人 fluctuations can also cause pink or purple tinges. Hot weather followed by cool can trigger it. Very cool temperatures at harvest time can also cause pinking in the interior branches.
4) Age can cause purpling of the curds.
Can you eat a cauli that has turned brown?
Hi Alison,
Brown cauliflower is not good to eat. Sometimes you can cut off the brown parts and use the inside parts that are white.
Dear All,
Could you please let me know the reason why small curd develops in the stem of cauliflower plant. One curd is obvious in one cauliflower plant, but we found some plant bear small curds below the main curd. We will be grateful if someone give us the reason why it is happening. For your better knowledge, we are cultivating cauliflower in Bangladesh and it is a subtropical country and the temperature is 30 - 20 degree C respectively at day and night. Thanks
